Brown Bread

A recipe from Holy Family Church of Delia, Alberta, shown here halved to make only one loaf.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
1 packet of instant yeast
3 1/2 Tbs sugar
1 egg
1/2 Tbs olive oil
pinch of salt
3-4 cups of whole wheat flour

Time: 3-4 hours from flour to bread in mouth.

  1. Mix yeast with 2 cups of flour. Beat egg. Add sugar, oil and warm water.
  2. Make a well in flour and pour in liquid. Mix. Add salt and remaining flour. Mix to a soft dough.
  3. Let rise 15 minutes.
  4. Punch down and let rise 1 1/2 hours covered with a damp cloth.
  5. Punch down and knead until elastic.
  6. Put in bread pan.
  7. Let rise until doubled in size.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.


Some morello cherry jam for the slices.
