Give Away Day: June 23
It’s like the Great Glebe garage sale but everywhere and free. The first city-wide Give Away Day is on Saturday, June 23 (Rain Date: Sunday, June 24). Why landfill when you can set loose on eager hands?
Rules for setting out the regiftable treasures
- Place items at the curb from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Place stickers or signs on items with the word “FREE”. Get a sign for your giveaways here.
- Ensure any items that you want to keep are away from your setout treasures or tucked away safely in your garage.
- After 4 p.m., bring any uncollected gems back to your home.
- Common sense prevails, don’t trample gardens, or take, say, cars sitting at curb. Watch for the sign. Health Canada advises that used children’s items from walkers and playpens to toys should not be placed out at the curb.
- Unfound treasures can be donated to charitable organizations.
- Consider offering your uncollected gems on a local Freecycle group or keep the circle of goods going thru usedottawa.com.

Answer: A search string (which will not reoccur, but anyhew) asked “why do cats put a kernal of food in their water bowl?” I’ve never seen her do it, only the kernel. My guess is: drinking water is also used as mouthwash. Horses rinse their mouths like that, why not cats with all the cleaning they do with their tongues.

I love Give Away Day! Wonderful idea. Good to warn about not taking the cars though. The Theodore Roosevelt quote is familiar to me from graduate school, thank you for reminding me of it again. As for kitties, one of ours paws her dry food into the water, then wooshes it around and then picks it up with her paw and eats it. Witnessing this day after day, we started buying her moist food. =)
