This and That: Roving Link Trove

IMG_4784 There’s the occasional bit of good design floating about like design job by Big Fish. As much as I like food photography, to directly see food is better than a 400x bigger than life rendering.

Ooh, I heard Jane Goodall is coming to Ottawa again. (I last heard her speak in the early 90s.) I see at Green Living Ottawa that you can view a live web cast of Dr Goodall’s speech if you register here at Algonquin before Monday, April 13th. You will be sent a password to enter the website anytime after 8:45 a.m. on the day of the 15th to view Dr. Goodall’s Speech.

Local Link: Chefs Robert Jutras and Kenny Hayden Culinary Conspiracy have conspired to bring you a series of playful dinners to celebrate the mushroom. The next of these $50 dinners will be held on April 26 and May 24. (Menu is still not announced.)

News: The study on anonymity meets privacy will be released in book form under creative commons by stages, under the title Lessons from the Identity Trail: Anonymity, Privacy and Identity in a Networked Society. (Personally I wouldn’t mind lack of non-anonymity, provided that there is accommodation for fake identities. ;) )

Out in America, Tao Lin started a publishing house last fall. Muumuu House’s first title is by Ellen Kennedy [reviewed at Gently Read]

At the Movies: There are publicity photos of the new Star Trek out. Still can’t tell anything new from them. And still a month till it releases. I expect to be irritated at diverging from canon and sticking to some narrower views of society, but I also give leeway for enjoying it. It claims to be a return to Roddenberry’s earlier compassionate optimistic view of humanity.

It is a Nimoy influenced film instead of Shatner, which helps, but a heavy weight of budget went to special effects. Seems promising at imdb. I’m apprehensive of what the script could be like. I’d have to judge for myself but the first sneak peek showings have happened. (And got to love Canadians when a flame war ends humbly with “I guess I was looking for an arrogant comment in that story, and jumped long and hard at yours…before I actually used my brain. I owe you a pint. Cheers…. “)

Poetry Links: National Poetry Month has a new poem daily. Beth Carswell at AbeBooks lists her picks for all time 10 top poetry books.

Housekeeping FYI: Sometimes I’m tardy replying to comments. I added a reply notification plugin that you can opt into.

Vid Link: 4 hours of photoshopping boiled down to under 4 minutes to transform the German chancellor Angela Merkel into Paris Hilton.
